Pin Pals: The importance of team building

Team building: The words often evoke cynicism and snark. But they don't have to.

Team building: The words often evoke cynicism and snark. But they don't have to.

Team building: The words evoke images of name tags, scavenger hunts and trust falls. How many times have you found yourself on a work-related retreat, led by an enthusiastic employee handing out t-shirts and asking you to describe what kind of bird you'd be - all in the name of "teamwork"?

OK, so maybe that's not exactly your idea of a good time. While none of us want to declare a spirit animal in front of a group of our peers, the truth is that even the silliest of games serves an important purpose.

"To grow and thrive, a workplace needs more than the bare minimum."

More than the 'bare minimum'

Similar to how you can't choose your family, a person rarely is given a choice when it comes to their coworkers. This can lead to a sense of isolation from the larger group, or even a mercenary "just in it for the money" take on work. When this mindset takes over, while an employee can certainly perform, they are unlikely to give more than the bare minimum effort required.

But to grow and thrive, a workplace doesn't just need the bare minimum; it needs engaged employees with a positive outlook and an emotional stake in what the company is trying to achieve. Team building is about creating a community within the group: You may never have asked for this particular community, but you are all in it together. When team building is done effectively, disparate groups of people find themselves united through a singular sense of belonging and purpose.

Out of the office, into the world

Team building offers tangible benefits for a company by fostering connection, improving communication, inspiring creativity and building trust between coworkers. With improved trust and communication, employees can work together in innovative ways to solve problems - leading to greater efficiency and higher productivity levels on the job.

Then again, a mandatory pizza party "mixer" isn't guaranteed to get coworkers chatting and connecting. The key is to bring team building out of the office and into environments that foster positive communication in an organic way. In other words: situations that are actually fun.

Alongside the fun through is another vital element for event coordinators: the social environment. Bowling and games like it have, through the centuries, served as hub for social activity, communication and play - where you're always likely to see people high-fiving, cheering and interacting in a light-hearted way they can't get anywhere else, regardless of pre-existing skill or familiarity with the game.

Competition, bragging rights and good, clean fun

With a social game like bowling, it doesn't really matter if you win or lose. All that matters if that you had fun and played together - as a team. This is the essence of team building through play, and can remove much of the cynicism often inspired by goofy trust games. The judicious application of good, clean fun is a powerful thing.
